The "Clean Install" option will erase your hard drive before installing the operating system. The "Upgrade" option will save your files, but erase system specific settings. While it's possible to use the upgrade option with Windows XP, it's not recommended. It's better to perform a clean install if you are reinstalling to solve software issues.
